Sunset District

The Sunset District was once sand dunes, established mostly after the 1906 earthquake when row homes, earthquake cottages and tract homes with garages were built into the dunes. You will find mostly Doegler homes here, Henry Doegler and Oliver Rousseau built homes on 25 ft. lots with no space between the homes. The Sunset is divided into the Inner Sunset and Outer Sunset, also called the “Avenues” running from 2nd Avenue to the beach at Ocean Beach and bordered by Golden Gate Park. Yes, there are beautiful Sunset’s over the Ocean.

The Inner Sunset features funky shops and a great variety of ethnic restaurants along Irving Street and 9th Avenue to delight the senses and has become a bustling sought after neighborhood which was once off the radar of tourists and even locals due to its’ reputation for fog. When its’ hot in the City, the Sunset is cool. Rising from the ocean in an upslope, many of the homes include ocean views. Many cultures blend here. Once home to mainly Irish and Italian immigrants, differing Asian cultures have settled here and have brought specialty grocers, a variety of ethnic restaurants and places of worship.

The Outer Sunset runs from 19th Avenue, a major thoroughfare that runs from the I-280 to the Golden Gate Bridge, and down to the Beach. There are several shopping districts on Taraval Street and around 44th Avenue and Judah. Families are the norm in the Sunset, home to many schools. With easy access to the beach and the park, there is abundant outdoor entertainment. Once homes were sought after as more reasonably priced in what City residents considered this out of the way neighborhood, though prices have risen as the district is sought after now for it’s small town atmosphere, availability of parking, homes with yards and the opportunity to re-fresh or remodel to suit.

Neighborhoods include: Golden Gate Heights, Outer Sunset, Inner Sunset, Inner Parkside, Central Sunset, Parkside, and Outer Parkside.
